Major/Essential Functions

Serve as a local audio reporter, who will be responsible for producing short and feature-length audio stories for digital and radio. Work alongside the newsroom to conceptualize and produce news stories for radio and digital platforms. Proactively participate in the creative cycle of content creation with reporters and supervisor. Develop pitches as needed. Guide all projects through the production process to meet or exceed deadline, quality and distribution requirements. Select and research topics; contact and interview sources; maintain notes and audio recording; write and edit stories; produce audio for air. Attend meetings and responsible for appropriate note keeping, correspondence, phone calls and supplies and equipment.

About the Department and/or College

Texas Tech Public Media news team is a small but growing operation. We focus on the stories in our community that aren’t being told. In this position you will have the opportunity to jump into our newsroom setting, pitch stories, gather sources and produce audio and written pieces. There’s also opportunity for producing content for state and even national audiences.

Required Qualifications

A student enrolled in at least 6 hours.

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate has 1) knowledge of reporting, storytelling, media production and communication, 2) ability to research and identify the appropriate news angle of a story, 3) excellent written and verbal skills and 4)  understanding and can implement NPR’s journalistic code of ethics.  This person will be a fast learner and an independent worker, who is eager to learn the skills of audio production and news reporting. Experience using Adobe Audition is preferred, but not required.  We will train.
