Thursday, January 15th – Monday, January 19th

 

The legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will be celebrated with an extended weekend of events in Lubbock. Here’s a look into what services, programs and events will happen.

Thursday, January 15th at 7pm | The celebration kicks off with Take A STEP at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center, 1501 Mac Davis Lane.
This event aims to bring communities and causes together. “This is a fun way to also bring attention to all we have to take a step toward to making a more unified community and nation,” said Bishop Deshun Avery, with the Martin Luther King Commemorative Council of Lubbock. “It’s just our way of reflecting and talking about being willing to take a step for our brothers and sisters within the community.”

Friday, January 16th at 6:30pm | The Individuals of Distinction Award Banquet at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center, 1501 Mac Davis Lane.
This event will recognize Pastor Charles Gonzales, Dr. Cicely Youngblood-Alexander, Coach Eric Ward, Dr. Kamau Siwatu, Pastor Roy Dabis, Officer Chamayne Johnson, Mrs. Marsha Johnson and Isaiah Doss. This will also take place at Lubbock Memorial Civic Center. It is $30 to attend. The guest speakers will be Dr. Stephanie Smith-Jeffery and Dr. Christa Tillman Young. Avery described the honorees as trailblazers and people dedicated to helping others. Tables are available to purchase for the event.

Saturday, January 17th at 6:30pm | A Youth Night and Musical will take place at at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center, 1501 Mac Davis Lane.
This will allow people, regardless of age, a platform to express themselves through dance, song, or other methods.

Sunday, January 18th at 5pm | A citywide service will begin at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center, 1501 Mac Davis Lane.
Dr. Ralph M. McCormick, of Second Calvary Baptist Church of Charlotte, North Carolina, will speak. McCormick is a graduate from Dunbar High School, which recently became a middle school.

Monday, January 19th 9:00am – 12:00pm | Final day of the celebration with the MLK Day of Service throughout the community.
This will be a combined event. Meet at the Roots B.T.W. Community Garden at 2109 Cedar Ave with lunch to follow at noon at the Roots Revitalization Center at 2301 Ave A. Contact Shirley Green (806)535-2475
