Franz Schubert began writing his eighth symphony in 1822, but completed only two movements and part of a scherzo before moving on to other works in the final years of his life. Though unfinished, this symphony is celebrated as one of the earliest masterpieces of musical Romanticism, distinguished by its expressive lyricism and rich instrumental texture. Unfinished Business complements Schubert’s incomplete work with other outstanding melodic pieces, placing a special emphasis on the clarinet.
