Mariachi Los Matadores was established in 2010 as an academic mariachi program and a part of Texas Tech’s Vernacular Music Center. The group focuses on a wide variety of styles within the mariachi tradition.

Mariachi Los Matadores is heavily influenced by the music and work of the Grammy Award-winning Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano. The director of Mariachi Los Camperos, Jesus “Chuy” Gusman, coaches the group twice per year and helps students learn traditional repertoire, along with more contemporary practice. Students in the group represent a wide variety of majors and demonstrate the importance of a science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (also referred to as STEAM) approach to learning. The program aims to represent mariachi music as a pathway to higher education through recruitment and retention.
