LHUCA Clay Studio Manager is responsible for daily operations at the studio. This position develops, manages, and oversees all activities at the Clay Studio including studio membership, educational programs, and studio maintenance. LHUCA is seeking a motivated individual actively engaged in contemporary ceramics and the craft community to fill this position. Salary Range: $38,000 – $42,000

About LHUCA:
LHUCA is a non-profit center for the visual, performing and literary arts located in the heart of the
Lubbock Cultural District. This year, we will celebrate our 22nd anniversary as an arts organization. Our
mission is to cultivate and celebrate all the arts by inspiring creativity and engaging with the community.
LHUCA’s main building houses four fine art gallery spaces that are free and open to the public. Concert,
dance, theatrical and film programs are held in our 159-seat Firehouse Theatre. In addition, our campus
includes an education building, plaza, multipurpose building, and clay studio. Each year, over 55,000
people benefit from LHUCA’s programs and services.

About LHUCA’s Helen DeVitt Jones Clay Studio:
The Helen DeVitt Jones Clay Studio is a working studio open to the public for everyone with an interest
in clay and the ceramic arts. LHUCA’s Clay Studio is the most well-equipped studio of its kind on the High
Plains of Texas. Our goal is to provide the best of the ceramic experience to all sectors of the public. We
offer a wide variety of classes, workshops, and programs in an effort to inspire our West Texas
community.

The Clay Studio has 15 wheels, 10 kilns, a clay mixer, pug mill, slab roller, clay extruder, and a fully
stocked glaze room. We mix and sell four different clay bodies supplying potters, sculptors, and schools
throughout the region. Along with our other services, the Clay Studio also custom fires work in our
wood, soda, reduction, and raku kilns.

Job Duties:
LHUCA Clay Studio Manager is responsible for daily operations at the studio. This position develops,
manages, and oversees all activities at the Clay Studio including studio membership, educational
programs, and studio maintenance.
• Responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of all clay studio equipment including electric and
gas kilns, wheels, clay mixers, pug mill, slab rollers, extruders, and glaze room tools
• Purchase and maintain inventory for clay, glaze materials, and other studio supplies
• Implement safety procedures for public and staff use of the studio
• Maintain a clean and orderly studio with up-to-date OSHA standards
• Schedule building maintenance of HVAC and other systems when needed
• Oversee the growth of Clay Studio programming and outreach
• Research, design, and schedule classes and workshops
• Recruit and hire class and workshop instructors
• Plan and create annual schedule of events for the studio
• Interview and hire part-time Clay Studio Assistant(s) and interns
• Work with the Executive Director and Development Director to develop annual Clay Studio
budget
• Manage annual Clay Studio budget and track expenses for grant reporting
• Work with the Executive Director, Programs Coordinator, and other staff to implement
collaborative programming
• Attend monthly board meetings and report on Clay Studio activities

Qualifications:

community. S/he/they should be community-minded and have a passion for education and outreach.
This person should thrive in a fast paced, collaborative work environment.
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in ceramics, studio art, or related field
• Experience in a similar ceramic studio environment
• Technical knowledge of gas and electric kilns, firing, and kiln repair
• Technical knowledge of clay and glaze mixing
• Basic knowledge of construction and repair for daily studio upkeep
• Ability to manage budgets, supplies, and scheduling
• Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with a team
• Organized and detail-oriented
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Excellent customer service skills
• Leadership or personnel management experience
• Supportive of the mission of LHUCA

Compensation:
Starting salary Range: $38,000 – $42,000 (depending on experience). Benefits package includes vacation
and sick pay, health insurance, and employer match retirement plan.
