CALL FOR ARTISTS
Storm Drain Art Project 2022
City of Lubbock and Civic Lubbock, Inc.

The City of Lubbock and Civic Lubbock, Inc. are excited to announce the second annual Storm Drain Art Project. This project is part of the City’s continuing education and outreach efforts to help citizens understand that stormwater flows untreated into our local waterways, and that everyone has a role in helping to protect water quality, stream habitat and aquatic wildlife. This year, we ask artists to incorporate images of Lubbock’s history and notable trademarks in their art.

After submissions are received, eight artists will be selected to paint murals in downtown Lubbock surrounding the Pioneer Hotel, West Table and Citizens Tower. The selected artists will paint their murals live in April during the City’s Earth Day on Broadway Festival.

Artist applications, more information about the project and selection process can be found at mylubbock.us/StormDrainArt2022

The City of Lubbock proudly presents the second Storm Drain Art Project in Lubbock, TX, which will take place in conjunction with our first Earth Day on Broadway Festival on April 22, 2022 from 6-9pm. The art contest for storm drain murals will open on February 1st, and the deadline to submit will be March 4th. Eight winners will be selected and will each be awarded with a $1,000 stipend sponsored by Civic Lubbock, Inc.

Following our art contest, we will open applications for vendors, including food trucks, eco-friendly products, musicians, and more! We invite you all to join us at Earth Day on Broadway to watch our eight winning artists paint their murals live!

BASIC INFO

Theme:

  • We ask that our artists connect Lubbock’s history and notable landmarks to the importance of keeping our lakes and waters free of pollution.

What:

  • Local artists will submit original mural ideas, which will educate the public in conjunction with the Earth Day on Broadway Festival.

Where:

  • This year’s drains are located in Downtown Lubbock, along Ave. K from the West Table to Citizen’s Tower.

When:

  • Applications open NOW
  • Applications due by March 4, 2022
  • Winning artists selected between March 21 – 25
  • Live mural painting April 22, 2022

Why:

  • In Lubbock, storm drains channel runoff directly to our rivers, lakes, and ponds. A misconception is that storm drains are “sewers” that lead to a wastewater treatment plant. This Project will educate people on the direct connection that storm drains have to our waterways.
