Art today is a rich tapestry of different forms of expression, including many that seem incomprehensible to the average viewer. This confusion is often a result of lack of information and understanding about the significance of the art from both a cultural and historic level. Contemporary art can be daunting, but through a guided understanding, most art of today can be easily interpreted.
Performance art creates a situation where the artist becomes the object of the expression. In this situation, the artist’s body is often the focus of the meaning of the work. With a multirooted history that includes experimental theatre, performance art has become one of the more relevant forms of alternative expression. Many artists today incorporate performance directly into their artistic practice, using it in conjunction with more traditional forms of art. Join us as we explore performance art from the Dada and Fluxus movements through more conceptual modern practitioners like Ai Weiwei.
